Being a 38-year-old bonus mom and a full-time working woman means there’s always a balancing act happening in my life.
It can be a little overwhelming between work, managing my blended family, and still wanting to experience all life’s fun things—like traveling, shopping, eating out, and going to concerts.
But the truth is, I don’t want to miss out on living life to the fullest, and I also don’t want to end up buried in debt.
I’ve learned that being a smart, intentional spender is the key to having it all without the financial stress.
So if you’re like me—juggling work, family, and the desire to enjoy the world—here are 11 easy ways I save money without sacrificing my love for travel, shopping, and good food.
1. Create a Fun Fund
One of my first things was setting up a “fun fund.”
This is a separate account (or even just an envelope) where I stash money for travel, shopping sprees, dining out, and concerts.
I treat it like a monthly budget line item and only use it for those unique things.
That way, I never feel guilty about indulging, because I’ve already set aside money.
2. Use Rewards Programs and Cashback Cards

Being a bonus mom means I often do extra errands, and all those little expenses add up.
I’ve turned to credit cards with cashback rewards and store loyalty programs to help me make the most of my purchases.
Whether it’s points toward travel or money back for groceries and gas, these little rewards help cushion the cost of other things I love.
3. Meal Prep Like a Pro

As much as I love eating out, it’s an expense that can quickly get out of hand.
I’ve found that meal prepping on Sundays saves me time during the week and helps me cut down on last-minute takeout.
I plan out meals we can make in bulk, so I’m set for the week and don’t want to grab dinner out on a whim.
4. Shop Smart—Don’t Pay Full Price
I’ve gotten good at finding deals.
Whether using coupons, hunting for sales, or shopping off-season, there’s always a way to get what I need without paying full price.
I also love apps like Honey and Rakuten, which help me find discounts and cashback options for my online shopping.
5. Make Use of Thrift Stores and Consignment Shops
You’d be surprised how much you can score at your local thrift store.
I’ve found beautiful clothes for myself and my kids at a fraction of the price you’d pay in a department store.
If I want something special, I don’t hesitate to check out a consignment shop. It’s all about finding the perfect piece for less.
6. Travel Smart: Be Flexible with Dates

When it comes to traveling, I’ve learned that flexibility is key to saving money.
I can often score great deals if I book flights on a Wednesday or Thursday (instead of a weekend) and opt for off-season travel.
I also love using fare comparison websites like Skyscanner and Google Flights to ensure I get the best prices.
7. Say No to Impulse Buys
This one is a toughie, especially when I’m scrolling through Instagram and see an ad for something I must have.
But I’ve learned that taking a step back before purchasing is key.
If I’m still thinking about it after a few days, maybe it’s something I need. Otherwise, I let it go. More often than not, the urge fades.
8. Attend Free or Low-Cost Events
Concerts and live events are one of my biggest weaknesses, but they don’t always have to cost an arm and a leg.
I’ve found that so many free or low-cost activities are happening in my city—free outdoor concerts, community festivals, or discounted theater tickets.
I’ve gotten good at finding the hidden gems that still give me the experience I’m craving, minus the high ticket prices.
9. Opt for Staycations or Road Trips

Sometimes, you don’t have to take a plane to experience a great vacation.
Some of my favorite trips have been just a few hours away from home—whether at a hotel in the mountains or a cozy Airbnb by the beach.
Road trips are cheaper and a great bonding experience with my family.
I pack snacks, plan for gas, and watch for deals along the way.
10. Take Advantage of Subscription Services (but Be Selective)
I’ll be honest, I used to sign up for every subscription service under the sun—streaming, beauty boxes, monthly wine deliveries…you name it.
But over time, I realized many of these subscriptions weren’t adding much value to my life.
Now, I keep only the essentials (like streaming services for family movie nights and a few beauty boxes) and cancel anything I’m not actively using.
It’s all about keeping the subscriptions that bring joy or convenience.
11. Involve the Family in Money-Saving Goals

Since I’m a bonus mom, I try to include my kids in financial decisions that impact the family.
We make a fun game out of finding deals for family nights, whether it’s scouring Groupon for activities or planning a budget-friendly family vacation.
Teaching them the value of money while making it fun will benefit them long-term.
Plus, it helps everyone understand the importance of saving and making thoughtful choices.
It’s All About Balance
As a working bonus mom, I’ve learned that it’s possible to enjoy the things that bring me happiness—like travel, shopping, and concerts—without feeling guilty or stressed about money.
It’s all about being intentional, seeking opportunities to save, and being disciplined about your goals.
